Uniform Civil Code: What Changes and the West Bengal Question

The Uniform Civil Code is one of the most debated legal ideas in India but what does it actually mean for ordinary people? The Uniform Civil Code, or UCC, means a common set of civil rules for things like marriage, divorce, succession, and inheritance, instead of separate personal laws for different religious communities. Constitutionally, it comes from Article 44 of the Indian Constitution under the Directive Principles, which says the State should endeavour to create a uniform civil code. That means it’s a constitutional goal not something directly enforceable in court. Simply put, one side of the debate sees it as a way to simplify laws and ensure equality for all citizens. The other side raises concerns about religious freedom and the loss of cultural diversity.
